Review: Paint It Black

Paint it Black, with its sprinkling of fantastical and metaphysical elements, is an okay read.

Buy or Pass Recommendation: Worth a read; not recommended for hard-core fantasy fans. The book is also overpriced in my opinion, so recommend reading it on KU (if and when available) or buying it on sale.

The Good

I liked the premise which is based on the hypothesis that dreams (or the unconscious mind, in this case) are a portal to alternate dimensions or realities. The story is ripe with possibilities and potential, and I wish the author had pushed the envelope further.

The book was a lighter read than I expected. It did make me wonder — albeit briefly — about the nature of time and reality but without setting off an existential crisis.

The Bad

Unfortunately, there is not much by way of plot or character development. The story lacks depth. The mystery of how and why Emily ended up in an alien world is never explained.

The Nit-picks

Minor punctuation errors, such as missing commas before dialogue tags.

I liked the book. Not one of my favourites to be sure, but I enjoyed it. If you are intrigued by the metaphysical connotations of multi-verses and alternate realities, and wish to explore the same without delving in too deep, then you might enjoy this book.
